Grow Your Own, You'll Need to Soon
No, I'm not talking about growing illegal pot plants to supplement your income. I'm talking about growing your own food, since food prices are due to rise nine percent a year--through 2010, according to projections put out by Advanced Economic Solutions. Okay, so you don't like that figure, try the US Department of Agriculture's prediction of rising food costs to the tune of five percent a year. While that might not sound like a lot to J. W. Gotrocks, it's a scary figure for Lois Laine. According to a Reuters article (May 30), "Americans spend more than $1 trillion a year on groceries, snacks, carry-out food and meals at restaurants." Egads, that's a lot. Every economist has adjusted their figures since February, up about 1.5 percent, and that means consumers are looking at larger food bills, compared with the take home salaries or paychecks we're depositing. In fact, Lois is thinking seriously of planting a cr*p load of corn, wheat, and soybeans in her yard. Heck, those commodities are hot on the stock market. I'm also planning on putting in the largest vegetable garden I've ever hoed....Yeah, just to hedge against the food Nazis, and their growing prices. Many of us will be using our huge (NOT!) tax rebate checks to get through the supermarket lines, and Wal Mart has already anticipated tapping into that money. They're offering "credit cards" for your tax rebates. Spend freely, pay at the checkout stand. If the greedy bast$#rds don't stop soon, between the gas prices and food prices, we'll all be walking, gardening, staying home--playing Monopoly and drinking home brews....
